Woodlink Domed Cage WLC6S bird feeder, empty

Quick Summary

85% Overall

The Woodlink Domed Cage bird feeder is ideal when you want to provide mixed seeds for small birds without also feeding gray squirrels, bully birds and bird predators.

The cage is wide enough to keep seed away from large birds and metal dome keeps it dry so you won’t get clumps of moldy food at the feeding ports.

It's fairly easy to clean and fill, though some may have trouble if hand mobility is an issue.

We Liked

  • No assembly required
  • Easy to fill Debris falls through the bottom instead of building up on a tray
  • Easy to take apart for cleaning

We Didn't Like

  • Some find the lid's spring clips hard to operate
  • Grackles may be able to reach in far enough to get at food
  • Red/black squirrels and chipmunks can get into cage (on all caged feeders)

Conclusion:

A quality product that’s well-designed, the Woodlink Domed Cage 6-Port Tube Feeder deters adult squirrels and large birds.

The small capacity makes it better as a second or third feeder than as your only bird feeder, and a bit pricey compared to other types of squirrel proof bird feeders.

Woodlink Domed Cage Bird Feeder Review

Woodlink Domed Cage bird feeder review

The Woodlink Domed Cage bird feeder is a tube feeder ideal for providing mixed seeds to small birds like chickadees, finches and juncos.

Up to 6 birds can feed at a time, while the cage allows several more to, er, wait in the wings. (Sorry about that...)

The domed cover keeps the birds safe and dry, and you’ll be able to see your birds clearly thanks to the airy, open cage.

If this is your sole or first feeder, you may have to fill it fairly often as it only holds about 1.25 lbs of seed. But it’s easy to fill. Just slide up the spring clips that hold the lid in place, lift the metal cap and tip it out of the way while you fill.

Unlike some similar-looking feeders, the Woodlink Domed Cage feeder does not have a solid floor on the bottom. This means that empty hulls and bird poop fall through instead of building up on the floor of the feeder and growing germs.

The Woodlink Domed Cage feeder is a small and light feeder - about 11 inches long by 17 inches high. The feeder itself weighs about 4 lbs, and it holds about 1.25 lbs of food.

Who is this product for?

The Woodlink Domed Cage feeder is ideal for bird lovers with small spaces, like apartment balconies, or as a second or third feeder reserved for smaller birds.

For anyone whose hands are stiff or impaired in some way, the spring clips and wing nuts might present a problem.

What's included

The Woodlink Domed Cage bird feeder comes fully assembled and includes a 6-port tube feeder, wire cage and dome, and 4 wing nuts to hold the cage in place.

The tube feeder insert has a hanger-type handle but is not suitable for mounting on a pole.

How to use the Woodlink Domed Cage bird feeder

Review- Woodlink Domed Cage bird feeder

When it's time to fill the Woodlink Domed Cage bird feeder, all you need to do is squeeze the spring clips together on both sides at the same time, and slide them up to the top of the handle.

You can then lift the lid and rotate it away from the tube's opening. Once you've got the birdseed in, just reverse the process and you're all done.

Placement

Hang this anywhere you have room for it.  Unless you are bothered by smaller squirrels and rats/mice, there's no need for clearance.

The Woodlink Domed Cage bird feeder only weighs about 5 lbs full, so most pole systems and hooks should be able to handle the weight easily.

Capacity

Holds about 1.25 lb of seed.

Filling

Easy - just lift up the spring clips and flip the lid back.

Cleaning

I love that Woodlink Domed Cage feeder is so easy to take apart when it’s time for cleaning.

Four wing nuts attach the cage to the tube feeder at the bottom. Remove the nuts and it’s easy to lift the feeding tube out through the top thanks to convenient slots in the dome.

Clean it like any other tube feeder, pop it back inside the cage and reattach the wing nuts. Simple.

What people who own the Woodlink Domed Cage bird feeder say

Positives

  • “Very happy with this item. It's sturdy, well designed and attractive. I really wanted something the squirrels could not get into and little birds would be safe from the local hawk and it has been all of that.”
  • “I bought two Woodlink feeders like this about 4 years ago and they have been great. I see the squirrels on the outside swinging back and forth, but they give up because they can’t reach the seed and they can’t get the top off.”
  • “Worth every penny! Instant success in stopping black birds and grackles from eating all the seed in my feeders. The finches took over right away and the bigger birds are eating off the ground. Well made. Easy to fill and clean. I'm impressed! My cheaper feeders are going away.”

Negatives

  • “I would like it to have a different mechanism to hold the top in place and a tray underneath the feeder would be nice.”
  • “I found a squirrel inside the metal cage eating away and when I went out to chase him, he just pushed the metal cap of the feeder out of his way and ran away.”
  • "It’s a little bit of work to take it apart to clean it.”
  • “If the perches and holes were staggered at 33.3-degree intervals (instead of 90 degrees) around the feed cylinder, the birds on the top perches wouldn’t be crapping on the birds on the bottom perches.”

Conclusion

A quality product that’s well-designed and well-made, the Woodlink Domed Cage 6-Port Tube Feeder excludes adult gray squirrels, large birds and bird predators, letting smaller birds feed in peace.

The small capacity makes it better as a second or third feeder than as your only bird feeder, and it's a bit pricey compared to other types of squirrel proof bird feeders.
